A Small Burn Changed Max Armstrong’s Life Forever After a Severe Infection
A small burn can seem like something barely worth thinking about.
For Max Armstrong, it became the beginning of a medical emergency that changed his life forever.
On December 2, 2024, the 40-year-old was camping with friends in Colorado when he accidentally touched a hot skillet while moving it from the fire to the table.
It was an ordinary accident.
He treated the burn and continued enjoying the trip.
But within days, everything changed.

What Started as a Small Burn
Two days after the accident, Armstrong noticed that his left ankle was beginning to swell.
At first, he believed he had simply twisted it while getting out of the camper.
There was no reason to immediately think that a small burn on his thumb could be connected to what was happening in his leg.
But his condition continued to deteriorate.
The wound became increasingly concerning, his toenails changed color, and something even more alarming began happening.
He started speaking incoherently in his sleep.
His Condition Was Getting Worse
By the time Armstrong reached an emergency department, his health was deteriorating rapidly.
According to his account, doctors diagnosed him with sepsis and believed that Group A Streptococcus bacteria had entered through the burn.
Sepsis is not simply a serious infection.
It is the body’s extreme response to an infection and can rapidly lead to organ damage and death without urgent treatment.
For Armstrong, the situation became so severe that he spent six days in a medically induced coma.
He Woke Up to Devastating News
On December 13, Armstrong woke from the coma.
But what he learned next would change his life permanently.
The infection had caused severe tissue damage in his feet.
Despite medical efforts to save the affected tissue, surgeons ultimately had to make an unimaginable decision.
On December 23, both of Armstrong’s legs were amputated below the knees.
What had begun with a seemingly minor burn had resulted in a devastating loss.
Learning to Live Differently
Recovery did not end with surgery.
Armstrong suddenly had to learn how to navigate life from a wheelchair while preparing for prosthetic legs.
For someone who had been an experienced hiker, the change was particularly significant.
The outdoors had been an important part of his life.
Now, he had to figure out how to experience it in a completely different way.
But Armstrong remained determined.
His goal was not simply to recover.
He wanted to eventually find his way back outside.
The Warning Signs of Sepsis
Armstrong’s experience also highlights why serious infections need to be recognized as early as possible.
Sepsis can develop rapidly, and symptoms can vary.
Warning signs can include:
- Confusion or disorientation
- Shortness of breath
- Extreme pain or discomfort
- Fever or shivering
- Clammy or sweaty skin
- A rapid deterioration in overall condition
A wound that appears minor can become much more serious if infection develops.
That does not mean every burn or cut will lead to sepsis. Most do not.
But when an injury is followed by worsening symptoms or a person suddenly becomes very unwell, it should not be ignored.
A Reminder That Small Injuries Still Deserve Attention
Max Armstrong’s story is not simply about a tragic accident.
It is a reminder of how quickly circumstances can change.
A small injury can appear manageable one day and become part of a much more serious medical problem days later.
Paying attention to changes in the wound — and especially changes in how the person feels overall — can be critically important.
If someone develops symptoms that could indicate sepsis, urgent medical evaluation is needed.
Max Is Still Looking Forward
Armstrong’s life changed dramatically in December 2024.
But losing both legs did not mean losing his determination.
He has had to learn new ways of moving, prepare for prosthetics and adjust to a future he never expected.
Yet his experience as a hiker has given him another reason to keep moving forward.
The mountains and trails that once represented adventure may now represent something else too:
a goal worth fighting to reach again.
His story is a powerful reminder that life can change in an instant — but so can the determination to rebuild it.
